As part of my ongoing work on a book collection that will explore history from Ancient Egypt to the present day, I had the opportunity today to visit the Palace of Knossos.
Guided by the excellent Chrysanthi Igoumenaki, I gained a deeper understanding of the Minoan civilization, its history, its symbols, and their significance. Among the most iconic are the Bull, the enduring emblem of Minoan culture, and the Snake Goddess, powerful symbols of strength, fertility, and humanity’s connection with nature.
Special attention was given to Minos Kalokairinos, the Cretan pioneer who first uncovered evidence of the palace in 1878, as well as to Sir Arthur Evans, who later undertook the systematic excavation and brought Knossos to international prominence as one of the most important archaeological sites in the world. Their work continues to inspire both admiration and scholarly discussion, while their busts within the archaeological site serve as a reminder of their invaluable contribution to the discovery and promotion of Minoan civilization.
It was an experience rich in knowledge and inspiration, one that will undoubtedly contribute to my research and future writing projects.
As this memorable visit came to a close, I had the pleasure of meeting people who continue to maintain a living connection with this historic place.
In the photograph, I am pictured with Mrs. Elsa, who was born beside the area now known as the “Theatre,” only a short distance from the palace itself. Her family remains there to this day, preserving a remarkable and enduring bond with the site and its long history.
Also pictured is her son, Dimitris, through whom this connection is carried forward to future generations.
It is often these small human encounters that add a deeper dimension to every journey.
