It was with great pleasure and emotion that I visited Marina Triantafyllidi (née Rallis) at her welcoming home, where we had the honor of conducting a remarkable interview about the historic Rallis family.
Through her narratives, a fascinating journey through memory unfolded — from Alexandria to the historic Kampos of Chios, where the roots of this distinguished Chian family remain deeply alive through its mansions, estates, and enduring traditions.
The Rallis family is included among the circle of the 37 aristocratic families of Chios and possesses its own family coat of arms.
The Rallis family is closely connected with important chapters of modern Greek and diaspora history. Members of the family founded the internationally renowned Ralli Brothers, one of the greatest Greek trading houses of the 19th century, headquartered in London with commercial activity extending across Egypt, India, and the British Empire. The company became prominent in the trade of cotton, grain, textiles, shipping, and finance, contributing significantly to the growth of the Greek merchant diaspora around the world.
At the same time, the family left a lasting mark on education and philanthropy through institutions such as the historic Rallios School in Piraeus, reflecting their enduring contribution to Hellenism, culture, and learning.
In an era when many values risk being forgotten, it is especially important that the knowledge of our history, traditions, and cultural heritage continues to be passed on to younger generations. The stories of families such as the Rallis family are not only part of our past, but also a valuable legacy for the future.
Our conversation highlighted not only the story of one of Chios’ most important aristocratic families, but also the timeless spirit of Hellenism that traveled from Chios to Alexandria, London, and across the world.
